Government shines light on spending over £25,000

Details of about £80bn of Whitehall spending on items over £25,000 have been published online as part of what ministers call their "transparency agenda".

Ministers say they hope the public will scrutinise the figures and help identify waste.

But critics say much of the data is meaningless without more context.

Cabinet Office Minister, Francis Maude said that some of the information released on occasion "will not be comfortable".
