Liberal Democrat Watkins 'happy' with Woolas judgement

Phil Woolas has lost his bid to overturn an election court's ruling that stripped him of his Commons seat and barred him from politics.

Speaking outside court his Liberal Democrat rival Elwyn Watkins welcomed the decision.

Mr Woolas narrowly won his Oldham East and Saddleworth seat in May but the result was declared void by an election court over his conduct in the campaign.

The court ruled Mr Woolas had made "a serious personal attack" on Mr Watkins.

"I am very happy that the judges have come to a clear conclusion" said Mr Watkins.
