Harman on Alan Johnson's resignation

A police protection officer who looked after Alan Johnson when he was Home Secretary has been referred to Scotland Yard's standards watchdog, which investigates complaints against officers.

The Metropolitan Police confirmed the news in response to newspaper allegations that the policeman was involved in a relationship with Mr Johnson's wife.

The Shadow Chancellor quit his job last night for what he called 'personal reasons'.

Labour's deputy leader Harriet Harman said his resignation was a loss to the Labour party.
