Sinn Fein's Gerry Adams 'resigns as MP for Northstead role'

Gerry Adams has officially resigned from his Westminster seat and become Crown Steward and Bailiff of the Manor of Northstead, the Prime Minister told the House of Commons.

But this statement was later disputed by the Sinn Fein President. The former West Belfast MP said he had not applied and had received an apology from the PM's office.

The House of Commons heard the Sinn Fein leader resigned his West Belfast seat with a letter to Commons Speaker John Bercow, as he prepares to stand in the Irish general election.

The DUP's Nigel Dodds asked the prime minister to "deliver" on a pre-election pledge to abolish parliamentary money for those who do not fulfil parliamentary duties.
