'Egypt was in a celebratory mood' says opposition MP

Egypt was in a celebratory mood as it expected President Mubarak to leave on Thursday night, said Dr Hossam Abdalla, a member of the Egyptian opposition National Association for Change.

He predicted the president would still leave soon, but only after more protests, and there would be more strikes and demonstrations ahead.

Crowds gathered in Tahrir Square and outside the presidential palace and the offices of state TV, but the president said he would continue in office until September.

British MPs Elizabeth Truss and Labour MP Stella Creasy gave their views after hearing Dr Abdalla.
