West criticises telling of 'porky pies' in MOD spending

The Ministry of Defence is being accused of pouring "billions of pounds down the drain" by Parliament's spending watchdog.

The Commons Public Accounts Committee is blaming the waste on "long delays" and "massive overspends" on equipment programmes.

The Defence Secretary, Liam Fox, says there has been a "culture of optimism" about how much projects will cost and how long they will take.

The former Defence Minister and First Sea Lord Admiral Lord West agreed, but told the BBC it was a long-standing problem.
