Lib Dem Tom Brake rules out election pact with Tories

The Liberal Democrats will fight the next general election as an independent party, despite Danny Alexander pledging spending plans and cuts towards 2017, says the party's home affairs spokesman Tom Brake.

Andrew Neil asked its home affairs spokesman what authority the Chief Secretary to the Treasury had to announce the Lib Dems signing up to coalition spending policies beyond the 2015 poll.

Mr Brake said the state of economy required longer-term plans - set out in the Autumn Statement - but there would be separate Lib Dem and Conservatives manifestos with no pacts.
