Michael Sandel on markets and selling Olympic torches

Professor Michael Sandel, who has taught political philosophy since 1980, claims there has been a shift from having a market economy to being a market society, where people are mainly motivated by money.

His comments come after a torch used on day one of the Olympic relay sold for over £150,000 on the auction website eBay.

He and Conservative MP John Redwood debated the role of the market when it came to nuclear weapons, selling kidneys, queue-jumping for public services or even selling the torches used in the Olympic relay around the UK.
