EU 'reticence' on independent Scotland
Could one of the SNP's main policy planks be in peril? As the party gathers for its annual conference in Perth, a leading Spanish politician has told The World At One that Madrid would not allow an independent Scotland automatic membership of the EU. SNP ministers have always insisted that Scotland would "inherit" its EU membership following a "yes" vote in a referendum.
But countries like Spain - which has growing independence movements in regions such as Catalonia - are concerned that giving Scotland immediate membership would strengthen breakaway movements within their own borders. Political correspondent Gary O'Donoghue reports from Brussels.
