The 'corrosive effect' of welfare

Speaking to Andrew Marr about the proposed introduction of universal credit next year to replace many benefit payment processes, Work and Pensions Secretary Iain Duncan-Smith has said there are "pockets" of the UK which have become overly dependent on welfare.

The former Conservative leader said the trouble with welfare lay in the ability of individuals to manipulate the system and hoped the reform of the system would persuade people and families that work was "vital, not just for money but for morale".
