Coalition donation: Joan Edwards was a 'private person'

A nurse has left more than £500,000 in her will to "whichever government is in office... to use as they may think fit".

It was initially divided up as a party donation between the coalition with the Lib Dems getting £99,423 and Tories £420,576 but both parties announced on Wednesday they would give the money to the Treasury.

Joan Seville, a friend of the late Joan Edwards, described how the news has taken Mrs Edwards' friends by surprise.
