Rail minister Simon Burns to stand down

Transport Minister Simon Burns is to resign from the government, No 10 sources have said.

The MP is to run for deputy Commons speaker after previous incumbent Nigel Evans stood down to fight sexual assault charges, the BBC understands.

Mr Burns has responsibility for the controversial HS2 rail link, having previously been a health minister.

The BBC's Ross Hawkins explains why it could be an interesting appointment.
