Mandelson: 'Mansion tax is not the way to tax property'

Labour's proposed "mansion tax" on properties worth more than £2m is "crude" and "short-termist", ex-Cabinet minister Lord Mandelson has said.

The party has said the tax is a principled way of raising money for the NHS.

Lord Mandelson told BBC Two's Newsnight programme he did not like the idea of "clobbering people" and preferred a Lib Dem idea of adding new council tax bands.
