Tom Watson apologises for calling Lord Brittan 'close to evil'

Tom Watson has apologised to Lord Brittan's widow for describing him as "close to evil", saying the phrase had been "emotive and unnecessary".

Speaking at a Home Affairs Select Committee hearing, Labour's deputy leader told Chairman Keith Vaz he regretted using the phrase which had originally been used by an alleged victim.

Mr Watson said he had felt at the time that "some people's voices were not being heard but I used the wrong language and I am very sorry about that."

Scotland Yard dropped an investigation into the late senior Conservative about a complaint of rape because of a lack of evidence.
