Alex Salmond defends Lockerbie bomber release

Scottish First Minister Alex Salmond has defended the decision to release the Lockerbie bomber on compassionate grounds, a year ago today.

Abdelbaset Ali al-Megrahi was released on the grounds of medical advice that he may have only three months left to live.

Mr Salmond said he understood the "anxiety" expressed over Megrahi's release, but his ministers had "followed the due processes of Scots law", and that the Libyan government had made assurances there would be no party to mark the anniversary.
