Alasdair Hay is named as Scotland's first fire chief

The man who will head the new national Scottish Fire and Rescue Service has been named.

Alasdair Hay, the current chief officer for the Tayside brigade, will begin work on merging the existing eight regional brigades by 1 April next year.

The interim headquarters of the new service are in Perth.

Mr Hay said protecting frontline services was a priority.
