Surgeons use scanner to make new ears for children

Surgeons have been using 3D scanning technology to make new ears for children.

The Royal Hospital for Sick Children in Edinburgh has used a 3D scanner and printer in a process that creates replacement ears and can even restore hearing.

Plastic surgery is often needed for children whose ears fail to develop properly or who have suffered damage in an accident.

BBC Scotland's science correspondent Kenneth Macdonald has been to see how the scanning works.
