Dumfries mental health care enters new era

The last transfer of patients out of the Crichton Hospital in Dumfries will take place in the New Year.

The move to a new £29m mental health unit at nearby Midpark had been expected about now but it has been delayed.

Health bosses have decided to leave the remaining patients where they are until after the Christmas period.

Midpark's completion will mark the end of 172 years of mental health provision at the Crichton.

In its heyday it accommodated 1,300 patients and was a place-of-choice for well-to-do families to send relatives for treatment and recuperation.

BBC Scotland's Willie Johnston reports on the changeover which is under way.
