BBC Trust chairman Lord Patten must go, Kim Howells says

The former Labour culture minister, Kim Howells, has called for the resignation of the chairman of the BBC Trust, Lord Patten, and the BBC's head of news Helen Boaden.

It follows the decision by the corporation's director general George Entwistle to stand down last night in the wake of two controversial decisions by Newsnight.

The first was not to broadcast a programme exposing child abuse by Jimmy Savile; the second to screen a documentary falsely implicating the former Conservative party treasurer Lord McAlpine in allegations of child abuse in north Wales.

Dr Howells told Vaughan Roderick on BBC Radio Wales that more resignations were needed to restore trust in the BBC.
