Michael Gove: Split exams systems in Wales, England and Northern Ireland

The secretary of state for education has said it is time for England, Wales and Northern Ireland to go their separate ways on GCSEs and A-levels.

Michael Gove has written to both the Welsh and Northern Irish education ministers saying he believes the differences are becoming so great, there must be a split.

Welsh Education Minister Leighton Andrews says he is talking to Northern Ireland about establishing joint exam standards - independent of England.

Last year Mr Andrews had 2,300 GCSEs papers re-graded after a review.
