Police overtime payments 'used to cover cuts'

The North Wales Police Federation chairman has said police forces' spending on overtime is being used to cover cuts in staffing.

Simon Newport told BBC Radio Wales that forces in England and Wales had lost 36,000 staff members, adding: "It's inevitable that overtime budgets will be stretched and used in order to fulfil the posts that have been lost."

His comments come as figures show police overtime payments in Wales have risen by £4.9m in one year.
