'Greengrocer's daughter Lady Thatcher wouldn't approve'

"Greengrocer's daughter" Lady Thatcher would not approve of the Budget, Islwyn MP Chris Evans has said.

Speaking in the Commons about changes to national insurance, announced on Wednesday by Chancellor Philip Hammond, he called it "a tax on small businesses".

Mr Evans said: "Can you imagine what that greengrocer's daughter from Grantham would say?"

He added that while Conservative party members "say how much they worship Lady Thatcher", she would not have endorsed the move.

Mr Hammond said disparity between the rates paid by the self-employed and employees "undermines the fairness of our tax system".
