South African smoking chimp dies

A chimpanzee known for his addiction to cigarettes has died at a zoo in South Africa, aged 52.

Charlie the chimp started smoking when some visitors to Mangaung zoo, in Bloemfontein, threw him lit cigarettes.

Officials at the zoo say they cut off his habit and discouraged visitors from throwing cigarettes into his enclosure.

An autopsy is being conducted to determine the cause of death.
