Ivory Coast is on the brink of civil war - that is the gloomy assessment from the United Nations.

The world has been almost unanimous in pressing Laurent Gbagbo to give up the presidency and accept defeat in last month's election - but with support from the army, he is refusing to oblige.

His backers accuse the UN of meddling.
