Trial puts spotlight on South Africa racial tensions

ANC heavyweights have rallied to defend the president of their youth wing's right to sing a controversial struggle song that is the focus of a hate-speech trial.

The song includes the disputed phrase "shoot the Boer", which the Afrikaans-speaking community insist is offensive and incites racial hatred.

But Julius Malema, head of the ANC Youth League, argues it is an important part of South Africa's recent history.

Mr Malema himself is likely to testify on Tuesday, as BBC's southern Africa correspondent, Karen Allen reports.
