Missing Algeria plane: Sandstorm in search area

Footage has emerged showing a sandstorm in Gao, Mali, where an Algerian passenger plane carrying 116 people disappeared on Thursday.

Algerian Prime Minister Abdelmalek Sellal reportedly told Algerian radio: "The plane disappeared at Gao (in Mali), 500km (300 miles) from the Algerian border." .

The pilot had contacted Niger's control tower in Niamey to change course because of a storm, officials say.

There had been bad weather for a number of days leading up to the disappearance, as the BBC's Alex Duval Smith explains.
