Burundi failed coup: Reprisal attack on rebel soldiers

The BBC has seen evidence of retaliatory attacks in Burundi, aimed at those accused of being behind last week's failed coup attempt.

A surgeon told the BBC police came into a hospital in the capital Bujumbura on Friday, firing gunshots before taking away three wounded rebel soldiers.

It is alleged that three soldiers were dragged from the hospital during the raid. A fourth died of his injuries but doctors were unable to confirm whether these were wounds sustained during the police attack or injuries for which he was originally admitted to hospital.

The BBC's Karen Allen visited the hospital, where she witnessed the bloody aftermath.
