Mullah defends 'beat your wives lightly' advice

Earlier this month Pakistan's Council of Islamic Ideology made a recommendation saying that a man could "lightly" beat his wife.

Although not legally binding, the proposal sparked outrage in Pakistan.

Campaigners say that at a time when violence against women is rampant in Pakistani society this so-called women's protection bill encourages men to abuse their wives.

Shaimaa Khalil spoke to the head of the council, to ask him why he had made such a proposal.
