Mass whale beaching in New Zealand

58 pilot whales have died after they washed onto an isolated beach in northern New Zealand.

73 creatures were beached, but attempts to refloat the 15 found alive failed on Friday. A fresh attempt will be made on Saturday morning.

The Department of Conservation said the whales were probably stranded during the night on the remote Karikari Beach, which is why so many died before they were discovered.
