Thai parliament elects Yingluck Shinawatra

Thai lawmakers have voted in the country's first female prime minister, 44-year-old Yingluck Shinawatra.

She passed the threshold of 251 votes for a simple majority in the 500-seat lower house.

Her Pew Thai Party gained an emphatic victory in July.

The BBC's Rachel Harvey says Ms Yingluck, whose political career began only 11 weeks ago, faces many challenges.
