Arrests in Russia after rallies banned

Russian police have detained two opposition leaders and dozens of activists who tried to hold demonstrations in Moscow and St Petersburg.

The opposition groups were calling on the government to abide by the constitution, which guarantees the right to peaceful assembly.

The authorities had refused to give permission for the rallies.

The BBC's Richard Galpin reports from Moscow.
