Siesta competition won by security guard

Unemployed security guard Pedro Lopez has won Spain's first siesta championship, having managed to sleep for 17 minutes in a busy Madrid shopping centre.

Competition organisers, who offered a 1,000 euro prize, say the Spanish tradition is in danger of disappearing because of the pressures of the modern world.

Entrants were judged not only on their ability to sleep for as close to 20 minutes as possible, but also on the speed with which they nodded off, their snoring and sleeping posture.

Sarah Rainsford reports from Madrid.
