Hope for Heidi as she starts a diet to treat her eyes

Heidi the opossum, the cross eyed marsupial that became a media sensation earlier this year, is set to have treatment to ease her eye condition.

Handlers at Leipzig Zoo are putting her on a strict diet of lettuce, carrots and chicken to help her lose weight and reduce the fat deposits around her eyes.

Heidi has already inspired a You Tube song and a toy, and attracted thousands of fans on Facebook.

She was abandoned in the US with her sister and moved to Germany in May.

Bill Turnball and Sian Williams report.
