'Supermarket hero' receives French citizenship

The Muslim shop assistant, who hid Jewish shoppers in a freezer during the attack on a kosher supermarket in Paris, has been granted French nationality.

Lassana Bathily, who was born in Mali and has lived in France for nine years, applied for French citizenship last year but had his application fast-tracked after the attack on the Hyper Cacher.

He was awarded French citizenship by the Prime Minister Manuel Valls and Interior minister, Bernard Cazeneuve.
