Legalisation of marijuana is 'a historic step'

The lower house of the Uruguayan Congress has voted to legalise marijuana.

If, as expected, the Senate follows suit, Uruguay will be the first country in the world where it is legal to grow, sell and consume the drug.

The bill was passed after more than 13 hours of debate.

Hannah Hetzer is the policy adviser for the Americas at the Drug Policy Alliance, a US-based organisation which supports the new legislation.

She told the BBC she welcomed the move saying it would cut drug crime.
