George Mitchell on Middle East peace talks
The United States Middle East envoy, Senator George Mitchell, says the Middle East peace talks in Washington have so far been constructive.
Mr Mitchell was speaking as the Israel Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, and the Palestinian leader, Mahmoud Abbas, were holding a one-to-one meeting without translators or note-takers.
Mr Mitchell said that in preliminary discussions with United States representatives, both Israelis and Palestinians pledged to work for common goals of mutual recognition and security. He also said the two sides had agreed to meet again in the Middle East within the next two weeks.
