Reports that President Mubarak 'may' step down

Seventeen days after protests against his regime began it appears that Egypt's President Hosni Mubarak may be preparing to step down.

He will appear on state television this evening and make a statement.

The Egyptian military says it has begun taking measures to protect the nation and to support what it calls the legitimate demands of the people.

A senior member of Egypt's governing party has also told the BBC that President Mubarak should now step aside and hand over power to the prime minister.

Caroline Hawley reports.
