Middle East links with the West put into focus

Britain and the United States have both asked the authorities in Bahrain to show restraint.

The Foreign Secretary, William Hague said he'd urged the foreign minister of Bahrain to take peaceful action to address the protesters' concerns.

Britain, which has strong trade and military links with the Gulf state, is now urgently reviewing arms export licences to the country.
