Future of Colonel Gaddafi's regime uncertain

"Libya is on the verge of civil war," Colonel Gaddafi's son has warned on Libya's national television.

In a lengthy address, Saif al-Islam Gaddafi said the country could slide into chaos. His comments follow days of violent demonstrations that have spread to the capital, Tripoli, for the first time.

Large crowds have been on the streets chanting for the regime to be toppled. Opposition forces are believed to be in control of the second city of Benghazi and the smaller city of al Bayda.

There is no information on the current whereabouts of the Libyan leader and the overall situation is still unclear.

The BBC's Dominic Kane reports.
