Violent crackdown on anti-government protests in Syria

Thousands of Syrian troops have launched a major operation to crackdown on anti-government demonstrators.

Tanks have been used, and opposition activists claim up to 25 people have been killed.

The worst violence is focussed on the southern city of Deraa, where the protests against the regime began.
