Syrian president announces amnesty amid ongoing protests

The Syrian President, Bashar al-Assad, has issued a general amnesty for all crimes committed by members of political groups, including the banned Muslim Brotherhood.

The move, which was reported by Syrian television, follows weeks of anti-government protests and continuing repression by the security forces that has left more than a thousand people dead.
