Palestinians celebrate UN vote giving observer status

There have been celebrations in both the West Bank and the Gaza strip after the United Nations General Assembly voted to give the Palestinian Authority non-member observer status.

The vote is largely symbolic, but it implicitly recognises a Palestinian state, and allows them to join UN agencies.

Israel and the United States voted against, saying it could hold back a peace settlement. The UK abstained for the same reason.

The BBC's Yolande Knell is in Ramallah in the West Bank - she explained why Palestinians had been celebrating, despite nothing having changed on the ground.
