US planes strike Islamic State positions in Iraq

The US military has announced that American planes have struck positions held by jihadists of the group Islamic State outside the Iraqi capital, Baghdad.

It is the first time American forces have targeted the militants threatening the city. President Obama declared last week that attacks against the group were to be expanded.
