Kurdish forces start push into the plain of Mosul

American planes have attacked positions in northern Iraq and near Baghdad, which are held by militants from the group calling itself Islamic State. They are the first such air strikes under the new US strategy to combat the group.

Meanwhile, Kurdish troops on the ground are preparing to start a push to retake the plain of Mosul.
