Afghan UN attack: 'This cannot be justified'

At least eight foreign UN workers have been killed in Afghanistan during an attack on a UN compound in the northern city of Mazar-e Sharif, officials say.

The violence occurred during a protest over the burning of the Koran in a US church last month.

Farhan Haq, the Deputy Spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, said the UN was still trying to establish the circumstances on the ground.

He said the UN secretary General Ban Ki Moon had called it "a cowardly attack, which cannot be justified under any circumstance".
