British Council in Kabul suffered 'cowardly attack'

Militants in Afghanistan have staged a co-ordinated attack on a British cultural office in Kabul, killing at least nine people.

Most of the dead were Afghan police, but a New Zealand soldier serving with international forces is also reported to have died.

The assault began with two suicide bombings outside the British Council compound, before the heavily armed insurgents entered the building.

The British ambassador in Kabul, William Patey, said all the insurgents involved had been killed after a lengthy gun battle and branded the attack as "cowardly".
