Washington Post's Dana Priest on US intelligence report

The US intelligence gathering system has grown so much since 9/11 no one knows its exact cost or size, the Washington Post newspaper has reported.

Journalist Dana Priest said the number of organisations and people at the "secret" level "was just too big to count".

She said that at top secret level there were "about 1,300 government organisations" - with as many as 850,000 people having the highest levels of clearance.

Acting US intelligence chief David C Gompert has dismissed the picture painted by the report as inaccurate.
