Obama defends plan for mosque near 9/11 site

US President Barack Obama has defended plans to build a mosque close to the site of the World Trade Centre in New York City.

Speaking at a dinner to mark the holy month of Ramadan, the US President said Muslims had the same right to build places of worship as other Americans.

Protestors have tried to stop the project, claiming it dishonours those who died in the 11 September 2001 attacks.

Iain Mackenzie reports from Washington.
