Obama marks end of year with two major successes

Barack Obama is ending a difficult year with two significant events which the White House hopes will change perceptions of his leadership and bolster his authority.

The US president has signed a bill which allows gays and lesbians to serve in the armed forces without having to keep their sexuality secret.

He has also won support in the Senate for the latest nuclear weapons treaty with Russia.
