President John F Kennedy's inaugural address in 1961

On 20 January 1961 John Fitzgerald Kennedy was sworn in as the 35th President of the United States of America.

The 43-year-old senator from Massachusetts had defeated incumbent Vice President Richard Nixon in the previous year's election.

In his inaugural speech to thousands gathered outside the Capitol in Washington DC, President Kennedy urged his fellow Americans: "Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country."
